Trying my hands on cheesemaking

I’ve always loved cheese boards and thought it’d be amazing to make my own. But honestly, I’m intimidated. Terms like curds, whey and starter cultures sound complicated. Is cheesemaking really hard for beginners, or is it just about patience? I’d appreciate advice on where to start. TIA

Hello hello @vanessa c! I get what you mean. I felt the same way when I first got curious about cheesemaking. I grew up helping my grandma with simple yogurt, so the idea of curds and whey sounded way more technical than it really is. From what I’ve read, soft cheeses like ricotta or paneer are often recommended as beginner-friendly since they don’t need aging.

Have you thought about starting with something quick like that before moving on to aged cheeses? Also, do you already have any basic equipment (like a thermometer or cheesecloth), or are you starting from scratch?

You're not alone, I thought it was all mysterious chemistry. Then I tried making mozzarella at home after watching a few tutorials, and it turned out way simpler than I expected. The hardest part was just being patient with the stretching.

I agree with @ariz0naa there, try quick cheeses like mozzarella or paneer as a first step? They don’t need aging, so you get to taste the results the same day, which makes the process less intimidating.
