Waxing vs. oiling before aging

I just wrapped up a small Emmental cheese and I'm getting ready to wax it. I've seen some guides suggest applying oil before waxing, does that actually make a difference, or is it just not needed? If oiling is a good idea, what type do you think works best?

I think you just have to be sure the rind was clean and dry and the wax will stick fine and age without issues or you could use a light coat of olive or coconut oil like some others, but honestly it's more common with natural rinds than waxed ones.

Oiling before waxing Emmental is mostly unnecessary, good wax seal alone protects it, but if you insist, neutral oils like grapeseed or mineral can help prevent cracking

Oiling before waxing is mostly cheese-making folklore, it traps moisture, weakens adhesion, and risks mold. A clean, dry rind under wax is stronger protection than any layer of oil
